Today was the main day for the St. Marys Heritage Festival. Each year is seems to get bigger and better. New and more events are added. For me it was much better than any other year for another reason.
This year we had two kids, Henry and Harriet, staying at our bed and breakfast with their parents. I also invited a former colleague, Beth, and her daughter and two grandchildren. That made the total four kids. That made all the difference.
It’s wonderful when you are allowed the privilege of looking at the world through a child’s eyes. We had eight of them.
Sometimes it isn’t the big things that amaze you. Something as each kid taking turns trying out our hammock is a big adventure. Watching them play with pure joy with our dogs in the backyard is refreshing.
Henry came up to me with a cherry in his mouth and asked where he could plant the seed, fully confident that in a few years there will be a tree full of fruit. Faith like that is infectious.
Then came the fireworks at night. Seeing the explosions lighting up their delighted faces was special.
Knowing that I was a part of creating a special day for these two families made all of the difference. Maybe that’s it. Through my hospitality, I created a spark that lit up the lives of these people. In return I was treated to the fireworks that their joy emitted.
All and all, it was a very satisfying day.
