Charlie Hustle

Whether you think he should be allowed in the Baseball Hall of Fame or not, you can’t dispute the on-field performance of Pete Rose.

One of the qualities he possessed was trying to maximize any potential. On routine pop flies that other players would casually run out, he would be sprinting. He figured that the defensive player would eventually make an error and when that happened he wanted to take full advantage of it. He made sure he was ready and running at full speed when any opportunity presented itself.

His philosophy could be summed up in his own words. “In every game there has to be a winner and a loser, and I try to make it a habit of letting the other guy lose.”

How are you doing in life? Are you running full-tilt, doing your very best for when that opportunity arrives or are you merely going through the motions? No matter what you do, you want to maximize your good fortune when it arrives.

What fuelled Pete Rose to make him hustle when others would slack off? Passion. He had a passion for the game that few have ever had. That is the other quality you need in whatever you do.

A friend, Bill, gave an example last night. He is an associate consultant with an investment company. He talked about serving a client with a small investment far beyond what was expected. The client’s father suddenly won $4 million in a lottery and wanted to invest the money. Guess whom they came to for advice?

Is it as simple as passionately doing your very best and waiting for the right opportunity? Do you think going through the motions and not being ready for your break is going to do it for you? Regardless, which path will create a feeling of participating actively in life?
