Pushing On

Since I started this blog on August 23, I have written 119 articles and poems. My goal is to write for a year and then evaluate the experience at that point.

As I write more and more, the ideas that were in my pool of ideas have been depleted. Like a gold mine, I have to dig deeper for something to say. Sometimes the search yields words that are, perhaps, not so profound.

I am reminded of marathon runners. They have to cover a distance of over 26 miles. I am told that there is a time during the race when they hit a wall. Their body, depleted of oxygen, just wants to give up. At that point the athlete has to focus on the goal and continue on, ignoring the cues to stop. Once this barrier is broken, it goes away and the runner is able to continue on quite comfortably.

I am at that point. I feel I have accomplished quite a lot writing what I have. I hope you have enjoyed my articles. It would be easy for me to pack it all in and be happy for my accomplishment. However, I have set the goal to write for a year and I am going to push on. Like the runner, I hope a new wave of ideas will emerge as I experience. I look forward to seeing what lies ahead as I run down paths I have never explored before.

To stop at this point would take me nowhere and I would be missing the opportunity of enjoying the new scenery I will encounter.

Does that mean you should never give up? It all depends on how badly you want to reach your goal. If you do want to reach it, you have to press on because there will be times when you want to give up. Don’t!

However, I must confess. I have given up on my childhood dreams of playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Yankees.
